Airline Rules And Insurance Cover For Travel During Pregnancy
Most pregnant women would love to take a holiday before the baby arrives, as it would provide a much-needed relaxation after the fatigue and morning sickness of the first trimester.
The best time for travel during pregnancy is during the second trimester. During the first few months, as most women suffer morning sickness and fatigue, spending time within the comforts of your own home may be the best option.
Travelling by air is safe during a normal pregnancy. Nonetheless, you have to check with your doctor before you make your travel plans. Most airlines carry pregnant women who may be up to 28 weeks into their pregnancy. However, every airline will have their own rules; some even allow travel if the woman is 36 weeks pregnant, provided she is healthy and has a letter from the doctor stating that.
If you already have travel insurance, you may want to check with your provider about your new circumstance. Otherwise, you could opt for a new policy covering the single trip. Since pregnant women are in the high-risk category, most insurers would not accept you if you do not have at least 8 weeks to your delivery date from the date of your return. Others may not consider if you are already into 27 weeks of pregnancy or more. You could use the services of a broker from the BIBA, British Insurance Brokers’ Association to find a provider. Your European Health insurance card, EHIC, may be of help during your travel during pregnancy, if you are travelling within Europe.
