As allegoric statements go, this one hits the button right on the nose. There are things in our modern lives that we take for granted, like the internet, lousy weather and our mobile phones. So much so, that we often leave our most treasured possessions unprotected from the dangers inherent in our day to day activities. For that reason, more and more people are taking out insurance for mobile phones for the peace of mind that it offers.

However, for those of us who still feel that it is an unnecessary expense because we do not have a hectic lifestyle, there is a piece of advice. A high percentage of people who lose their mobile phones, do so whilst undertaking a leisure activity.

It is often in the most innocuous circumstances that accidents happen. I can recall my brother, who considers himself a master fisherman, explaining how he had battled for well over an hour to land a large fish from a boat off the coast near Brixham whilst on holiday there.

Once all the cheers and whoops of delight had ebbed away, he decided to send a picture to me bragging about his catch! Imagine then, his consternation when he could not find his mobile phone anywhere. He looked everywhere. He knew he had it on the trip, because he had already sent to me a picture of him next to the ‘captain’ of the boat.

Only when one of the fellow fishermen ventured that he saw something splash into the water when my brother cast his line out, did it sink in (no pun intended)

He had anticipated howls of derision when he made a claim. Let’s face it, it is insurance for mobile phones, not stupidity. Nevertheless, his claim was accepted and dealt with just as professionally as any other. Needless to say he has now purchased a waterproof model!
